As a result of the completion of the privatization of the distribution companies and the amendments made in the Electricity Market Law No. 6446, a new stage has been launched in the liberalization process of the Turkish electricity markets.

Electricity distribution privatizations have reached a certain stage thanks to the experiences lived during the liberalization process which was accelerated by the Electricity Market Law No. 4628, which entered into force in 2001; the YI-YID (build-operate or build-operate-transfer) projects and production privatizations in terms of production and wholesale markets; the developments in the consumers' freedom to choose suppliers in terms of the level of retail sales.
